Lilian S
JANUARY 2018 – PHARMACY.
Lilian S. is a pharmacist from Egypt who moved to the US back in 2013. She was on her own except for her young daughter.
It was a very hard time for her. But she was able to pass the pharmacy training she needed to work in America.
Next, she took her time preparing for her FPGEE. She put the TOEFL on the back-burner to avoid overwhelming herself in this difficult time.
Beginning Again
Once she passed her FPGEE, Lilian’s challenge was making sure her English skills were where they needed to be to take on the TOEFL with confidence.
To hone her English skills, she took a course at a local community college…
“After that course I decided I was ready to try the TOEFL exam, so I took it in 2015, but I didn’t do well. I heard about NoteFull from some others, so I registered for the Complete TOEFL Mastery program later that same year. When I took the test again at the beginning of 2016, my scores increased! But still not enough. I got speaking 23, reading 18, listening 23, and writing 20.”
Finding Help
Despite her scores, Lilian pressed on. She knew she had found her solution. And she knew she could do it if she kept working hard!
She picked up our 3-Week TOEFL Vocabulary: Advanced Series and started giving herself writing exercises as homework. She also started a collection of vocabulary words. She put them all in a booklet of hers that she would review regularly. As we’ll find out soon, this ended up being very helpful later on!
Taking the test again and again from 2016 into 2017, she was getting closer to her goal. She could sometimes get the scores she needed in reading and writing. But her speaking scores were just a few points shy of 26.
That’s when she chose to sign up for our Online Classes. She liked in-person tutoring sessions better, so she was unsure about our online sessions at first. But she ended up having a poor experience with a tutor that came to her home. So she decided to give NoteFull a chance.
“I began having tutoring sessions with Nayyer in May, and we focused on reading. Then in June we started working on writing, and after that it was several months of speaking sessions. My writing scores started staying more consistently at 24, and I got a 24 in speaking! Finally, I started to realize that a 26 might be possible!”
Lilian saw how quickly she was improving. And she wanted to improve even faster! So, as November approached, she asked if she could set up several One-on-One Tutoring sessions with Mathew in a short period of time.
Mathew was able to clear his schedule for about 10 days and they worked hard to improve her speaking skills.
“Mathew noticed that I speak really well, it’s just that I’m over-thinking sometimes. And this would cause me to stop in the middle of my response. He told me not to think, just to speak. He knew so well what was going on in my mind! He recognized that I’m a perfectionist, always worrying about things like grammar. He told me that they don’t matter much, and that I can still get a 26 with these kinds of mistakes.”
Armed with this new knowledge, she went into her next TOEFL with confidence.
On Their Way
On December 8, 2017 Lilian went in and got the 26 in speaking that she had worked so hard for! Not only that, but she surpassed her goal scores in all 3 other sections too!
She also found that the test used many of the vocabulary words she had wrote down in her notebook along the way. Looks like all that hard work paid off 🙂
