Beginning Again

John got his Pharmacy degree in his home country of Egypt back in 2010. He then made his way to the US a few years later in 2014. Soon after he arrived, he passed his FPGEE. Then he turned his focus to the TOEFL…

John’s challenge was feeling confident and ready to take on the TOEFL.

“For the first 12 months I was afraid of taking the TOEFL. I studied a few free websites but I didn’t feel ready. Then I heard some of my friends from church talking about NoteFull and how it had really helped them, so I decided to check it out.”

Finding Help

Thanks to the help of his church friends, John had found his solution. He started out using our free videos on YouTube and found them very helpful and easy to understand.

By early 2015, he felt ready to take his first TOEFL. He was able to get a total score of 84 with a 24 in the speaking section. Not bad for the first time! Although his scores fell short in all 4 sections, his high score in the speaking section told him that he was on the right track.

John then signed up for the Complete TOEFL Mastery program. He knew he needed to have a better understanding of all 4 sections of the test. He studied hard for 4 months before taking his next TOEFL. This time he improved his score by 10 points for a total score of 94! He noticed his reading and listening sections had greatly improved this time around.

At this point, he chose to give our Tutoring Sessions a try. He had heard from his friend Miriam that Mathew was a great tutor. So he signed up for 8 sessions over a 3-month period…

“Many people think there is a huge difference in speaking skills to go from a 24 to a 26. It’s not true! There are just some very specific techniques that you need to understand and master. These techniques are all there in the program, but having Mathew focus on them and explain them in more detail, that is what pushed me over the top…I mean, with speaking questions 1 and 2, I was not being detailed enough with my examples. I was talking too generally. For question 3, I wasn’t connecting the change from the reading, and the student’s opinion. For question 5, I wasn’t connecting how the solution was going to fix the student’s problem.”

Armed with the right strategies, he was ready to take on the TOEFL one last time…

On Their Way

After 11 attempts, John was able to finally get his dream TOEFL scores! This was his second try after his tutoring sessions with Mathew. That just goes to show how effective one-on-one tutoring can be. Not only did he learn the specific skills he needed to boost his scores. But he also got support and motivation when he needed it most…

“I remember that as we began to work together, I was really wondering if I was showing improvement. Sometimes it’s hard to see whether you’re making progress because you don’t have an outside perspective. Then Mathew told me that for speaking, I was closer to a 30 than a 20. That meant so much to me, to hear someone else give me that feedback. I felt like I had received a shot of confidence after that!”

Now that the TOEFL beast has been slain, John plans on getting his intern Pharmacist license. So, next time you pick up a prescription, take a good look at whoever works there. It just might be John himself! 🙂
