Beginning Again

Housam K. came to the US from Syria with his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. He rarely had any problems with exams in the past. He passed his FPGEE with ease. But there was something different about the TOEFL…

He first took the TOEFL in May. Then he ended up trying again each month through August. But something was wrong! He could get the scores he needed in reading, listening, and writing. He was even getting high scores like 27 in the listening section! But his challenge was the speaking section. He just couldn’t seem to get the 26 he needed.

When you speak with Housam, you can tell that he has a strong grasp of the English language. He is very easy to understand. But his speaking scores weren’t reflecting that. He was getting a 23 every time he took the test!

Finding Help

You can imagine how frustrating it must have been for him. Passing 3 out of the 4 sections you need to move forward with your career. But never being able to improve your score in the 4th section. It was a very difficult time for him. But he never gave up!

So, Housam started searching online for a solution. He found our Complete TOEFL Mastery program and went through it with one of his fellow students. He also started Tutoring Sessions with Mathew and Joseph.

Before I used to rush myself because I wanted to deliver a fast and good speech, but I realized that I couldn’t get my score this way. I started to think before I spoke for every single sentence. I tried to make it very simple. I avoided complex sentences.”

He was constantly studying and honing his skills. Especially his note-taking skills. This came in very handy when he took his 5th exam…

On Their Way

All his hard work finally paid off in September when he got his 26 in the speaking section! With a total score of 96, he could now work as a fully licensed pharmacist!

“I also realized we have to finish on time. You want to finish on time. You want to deliver a smooth speech. With the first four exams, I didn’t finish on time, but on the final exam, I finished at the exact time and I think that helped me get my 26.”

Housam celebrated for 3 days once he got his passing TOEFL score. And with good reason! He had finally defeated the TOEFL! 

The TOEFL can be very scary. And as Housam’s story shows, it’s not the same as other tests. But don’t worry. With hard work and the right tools, there’s no reason to be scared of the TOEFL monster!
