Beginning Again

Nazilya’s trip to the summit of mount TOEFL started about 4 years ago with her first attempt. Here are the scores she earned:

R16, L20, S18, W18

She felt overwhelmed by how far she needed to come to meet the pharmacy board’s TOEFL requirements. Especially when it came to the speaking section. It was such a challenge for her that she thought she may never get her dream speaking score…

Finding Help

But as luck would have it, a couple years later, Nazilya found her solution…

She signed up for her first program with NoteFull at the start of 2011. Over time she built up her arsenal to include the following NoteFull programs:

Nazilya’s study plan had her spending 20 hours a week on TOEFL prep. 

In the Speaking Mastery program, she found that Step 3 to be a huge help. She learned how to take short-hand notes. She learned how to manage her time. And she greatly improved the smoothness of her speech. Joseph’s videos also taught her how to approach the different types of questions in the speaking section. And she always recorded her answers so she could listen for and correct her mistakes. 

For Nazilya, the reading and writing sections all came down to 2 things. Vocabulary and content. Whenever she came across words she didn’t know, she would look up the translation. And she always made sure to learn how to use them in context so she could use them again in the future. 

Another thing that helps a lot with the writing section is using real examples. Joseph suggested she start using them to enhance her content. This coupled with her improved vocab, she wouldn’t have to worry about the writing section ever again.

Nazilya’s tutoring experience was a huge breakthrough for her. The hands-on support was something she couldn’t get anywhere else…

“I had tutoring sessions with Lauren and Joseph. They helped me tremendously. First of all, my problem was with note-taking. Lauren taught me how to take shorthand notes. Second, she  put a lot of effort to teach me how to use articles. Also, my biggest worry was what kind of examples to give on speaking questions 1 & 2. Lauren and Joseph spent a lot of time explaining how to use my personal experience in every situation to me. But the biggest help that I got from them was the  psychological help. In every tutoring session they instilled confidence, encouragement, and hope in me. I remember their e-mails to me with the big words ‘YOU CAN DO IT.’ Lauren promised me to be with me until I pass, no matter how much time it would take, and she kept her word.”

And for 4 long years Nazilya never gave up. That’s why when her results came in last month, she saw her dream scores staring back at her!

And she has some things to say to all her fellow pharmacists as well: 

“Even if you miss the deadline for the FPGEE score because of the TOEFL, do not be disappointed. Move on forward and keep doing until you reach your goal. When I enrolled in Medical University in my country, we studied  the Latin language. I still remember a phrase ‘Per aspera ad astra’ which means ‘Through thorns to the stars.’ No matter where you are, try to reach your star.”
