SEPTEMBER 2014 – PHARMACY.
It’s our favorite time of the month here at NoteFull: Student of the Month time! This month we are proud to be celebrating Medhat A. from Egypt!
Medhat’s dream is to become a practicing pharmacist here in the US. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy has strict standards that students must meet to get their licenses. So, Mehat would need to reach a certain score in each section to pass. Including the dreaded 26 in the Speaking section…
Medhat’s first TOEFL was about a year and a half ago. And when he got his scores back, he was faced with a challenge:
R6, L12, S20, W17
He thought he might never be able to turn his scores around…
Thankfully though, his wife is also a pharmacist. And she had used NoteFull to pass her TOEFL before. So, he thought he would give it a try too.
Even though Medhat found his TOEFL solution in NoteFull, he had a very difficult TOEFL journey. His wife happened to be studying at the same time. So they had a hard time balancing their studies with taking care of their young son. He was also working as a pharmacy tech to support their family. So his study time was heavily limited throughout his journey. But Medhat made time when he could and pushed through.
He started out with our 3-Step TOEFL Mastery program. And later got both the 12-Step Speaking and 12-Step Writing Mastery programs. To get some hands-on support, he signed up for tutoring sessions. And to top it all off he got some reviews as well.
Medhat was studying 4-6 hours every day. Whenever he could find the time.
“Waking up at 7 o’clock AM to study had a great impact to improve my skills.”
Taking practice tests was very helpful to him. But he mistakenly thought that they would help him score above a 23. He found that mastering NoteFull’s skills and strategies was the key to success.
“it doesn’t matter how many practices you answer, but what really matters is to apply what you learn from the system to your answers… you will get your desired score.”
As for building a personal schedule, Medhat says:
“I didn’t have an organized schedule for each section, but when I broke this habit, my scores improved dramatically.”
And when you find yourself stuck, not knowing what you’re doing wrong:
“The tutoring sessions, and reviews at last few months helped me to know the obstacles that hinder my speaking score to shoot up.”
Medhat knew that if he wanted to succeed that he needed guidance. His experience with NoteFull taught him everything he needed to know to get that 26. But it also taught him about himself…
He learned how his “um’s” “uh’s” and pauses were affecting his score. And how to break those habits.
He learned how to make better notes to save time and build better answers.
But most importantly, he learned to change the way he looked at himself AND the TOEFL. As many of you know, sometimes your TOEFL results can change how you see yourself as a person. Suddenly, you get tunnel vision. You can even forget why you started in the first place! NoteFull tutoring sessions can help you become more confident in yourself. They can teach you how to be “a fighter instead of a person who didn’t have a spirit.”
This is exactly what they did for Medhat…
On Their Way
After 17 TOEFL attempts, Medhat finally passed! His first total score was a 55. This time, he scored a 101! That’s almost double! Take some time to let that sink in.
Absolutely amazing job, Medhat! You overcame so many obstacles to get your dream scores. Now nothing can stand in your way!
“I feel I can breathe, I have a goal in my life, I see life brighter, and joyful. Now I’m able to smile, and spend more time with my family especially my son which gave me joy nothing else can give to me.”
Are you feeling overwhelmed by the TOEFL? Here are Medhat’s words of wisdom for you:
“I would like to say for every student struggling with this test, never feels that you’re foolish or have limited skills this exam is really hard. Never give up, always says that this practice, or test I will take might be a step, or the last step toward my victory. Take a session with any of the great teachers of NOTEFULL to diagnose your problems, then put a plan to work on them to improve your skills. When I got my scores for the first test, I told myself I never will pass any section, but after studying hard, I got 29 in reading, and listening many times, just work hard, and trust God that will make you one day celebrate, and take my place in this page.”Reading: 22, Listening: 28, Speaking: 26, Writing: 25
