Beginning Again

May’s challenge was figuring out that the TOEFL is much more than a test of English fluency…

“At first I wasn’t worried about the TOEFL because I knew how to speak English. I didn’t study before my first test at all. Then I got the results back and I didn’t do well.”

May studied hard for a whole year before taking the test again. When she got her scores back, she got a 26 in speaking and a 24 in writing. But her reading and listening scores fell short…

Finding Help

It wasn’t until the fall of 2013 that she found her solution…

She signed up for NoteFull’s 3-Step Reading Mastery and 3-Step Listening Mastery programs and saw a striking change in her scores. Instead of scoring a 14, she was getting 20’s in both sections! But she was still struggling with vocabulary. 

So to better prepare herself, she bought the NoteFull Beginner TOEFL Vocabulary program. She also watched television and read books to improve her skills.

At this point, May was going through something that is common for a lot of TOEFL students. She needed certain scores in each section. On one test she would get her goal scores in every section but the reading. And on another she would get all the scores she needed except for the writing.

Over and over again she would try and fail to reach her goal scores in all 4 sections. She was taking the TOEFL once every 2 weeks, but she couldn’t seem to find success. Imagine the frustration she must have felt! You may be going through the same thing right now…

“This was such a painful time in my life. I was so stressed. I felt like I had cancer, and every two weeks I was going in for chemotherapy. I came to dread those exams. I would spend all day studying, watching other families spending time together, going for bike rides. It felt so unfair! To make matters worse, I found an online website that offered a tutoring package for $500. The tutor couldn’t even explain why a particular reading answer choice was right or wrong. I’d bring him a passage and he would say that there wasn’t enough information. He was like a thief!”

But she wasn’t going to give up that easily…

After years of struggle, May chose to sign up for Tutoring Sessions with NoteFull in late 2016. Throughout the spring and summer of 2017, she had a total of 10 sessions with Mathew. 

He assured her that she had all the skills she needed to get her dream reading score. She just needed to believe in herself. He showed her that she didn’t need to read a whole paragraph to figure out the answer to a question. And more importantly, he advised her to give herself some space before her next test. 

On Their Way

As it turned out, a little extra time and confidence was all she needed. On her next attempt in September, May got her dream scores in all 4 sections!

In 2 years time, May plans to be working in the US as a fully licensed pharmacist. She encourages anyone studying for the TOEFL to never give up. Believe, believe, believe! Even when it seems hopeless. If you need to take a break, then give yourself that time. But don’t ever give up on your dream!
