Beginning Again

Mariangela’s advisor suggested that she go for her PhD at a major university in America. But she quickly found that they all demand a TOEFL score of at least 100, sometimes even a 104 or 105! This was her challenge…

In late 2016, Mariangela started attending classes with an English teacher. He helped her a lot with grammar and punctuation. But he didn’t know very much about the TOEFL. So she didn’t do very well when she went in for her first attempt in January.

Finding Help

That’s when she started looking online for a solution. Thankfully, she came across NoteFull’s free YouTube Speaking series…

Mariangela was pleasantly surprised with how much she learned from them. The tips and templates that the videos taught her were very helpful.

For instance, she thought that all she had to do was speak until the time was up. That she didn’t have to finish her ideas. But she learned that she needed to complete the thoughts in her answer before the time ran out. She also found the reading and writing videos showed her just how much more TOEFL help she needed…

“I decided that I needed a lot of help, so I registered for the Complete TOEFL Mastery program in early February. My exam had been pushed back from March to April, so this gave me some time to study it. I had thought the reading and listening sections would be easy, but there was a lot more to it, especially learning the strategies for each question type.”

She spent a lot of time studying each section of the test. The reading was the hardest for her. But she actually found herself starting to enjoy the listening passages. She even found them fun and entertaining!

Through all her hard work, she found that the speaking and writing sections were a lot more psychological than she realized. She started to notice that the quality of her answers depended quite a bit on the state of mind she was in at the time.

To polish up her speaking and writing answers, she signed up for some Reviews with Mathew and Nayyer. They scored her responses and gave her insight on how best to improve them. For example, they helped her boost her word count from 300 words to over 500!

She attended 4 group webinars that Joseph hosted throughout the month of March. And also signed up for a One-on-One Tutoring session with Mathew just a few days before her test.

The most helpful thing she learned was that she needed to have a strong conclusion in her answers to speaking questions 4 and 6. The tutoring session was last minute, but she noticed a huge improvement in her skills.

By this time, she no longer struggled to give her speaking responses. It was so automatic to her that she felt like a computer!

On Their Way

In the end, all her hard work paid off. On April 1st, Mariangela went in and beat her goal score by 5 points! With an amazing score of 105, her options for PhD programs were wide open.
