Professor Clark

Nowadays, there is a lot of attention on improving the experience of students in the classroom. Over the next few weeks, we will be discussing new and innovative approaches to teaching in the classroom. To begin this discussion, I want you to share a teaching method that you experienced as a student that you did NOT find helpful–for example, daily homework, group work in class, etc. Explain why you didn’t find it helfpul.

Betty

While I was in elementary school, our teacher would ask the student who earned the highest score after an exam to step in front of the classroom. Then, she would ask the student who earned the lowest score to do the same. I didn’t find that helpful because it created a lot of stress for students who didn’t want to be the one with the lowest score.

Thomas

In high school, I had a history teacher who organized students into groups to research topics that they would then teach to the class. This created a positive experience while working in groups with others, but it led to a lot of confusion some groups that didn’t care as much as others about their presentations.

Professor Dougherty

In our textbook, we read about the different ways that corporations are working to gain and retain a competitive advantage. Many have noticed growing concern among employees around job security. As a result, some employers believe that guaranteeing employees their job and salary for a set amount of time–for example, 5 years, 10 years, etc.–can be a wonderful way to retain highly skilled employees to remain competitive. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Louise

Guaranteeing employees jobs for any length of time sounds like a way to lose competitive advantage rather than gain it. It seems obvious to me that when the pressure of needing to perform to get a raise or keep your job is lost, employees will begin to relax and care less about their work.

Robert

If employers did this, I’m certain employees will react the way corporations expect. It would mean that one of the major stresses would be lifted from employees shoulders. They would be able to concentrate more on their work because they know the company has decided to make a long-term serious investment in them.

Example 3

Total time to read and write: 10 minutes

Your professor is teaching a class on public policy. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.

In your response, you should do the following.

  • Express and support your opinion.
  • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.

An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Professor Willaims

Many public policy experts cite alarming trends in childhood health as a cause for concern. There is now a growing movement among policy makers to shift more of children’s time in school to physical activity, specifically through sports. Some have supported the idea of mandatory participation. What do you think? Is it a good idea to require young children to participate in a sport as soon as they are physically capable? Why, or why not?

Ann

I think this would be a great idea. Requiring students to join a sport will help them develop friendships. In any team sport, everyone needs to work together to win. They need to cooperate and help one another improve and achieve a common aim. If young children play a sport, that will lead many to connect with new friends that they wouldn’t have met in their classes.

Zaine

Though Ann mentions an important point, forcing students to participate in a sport can lead to some unfortunate consequences. First, and perhaps most important, not all children have the desire to play sports, so they won’t perform well. And, it’s easy to see these students being bullied by other students who want to win.

Example 4

Your professor is teaching a class on economics. Write a post responding to the professor’s question.

In your response, you should do the following.

  • Express and support your opinion.
  • Make a contribution to the discussion in your own words.

An effective response will contain at least 100 words.

Professor Henrickson

Our current unit looks at trends in employement and the predictions prominent economists have made for what might occur in the future. In the past, some believed that job opportunities for employees would have increased since access to education and technology became more widespread. When we look at what’s going on now, this hasn’t necessarily been the case. What is your opinion about the future? Fifty years from, do you believe employees will have more or less job security? Why, or why not?

Candice

Job security will not be as strong in the future as it is now. Globalization has increased the difficulty of getting and keeping a good job. Now, you need to compete with other professionals from all over the world. There’s no reason to think that with advances in technology this trend of increased of competition will stop.

Henry

I see Candice’s point but it doesn’t take into consideration the fact that job opportunities have risen because of globalization. New companies are being founded more often than in the past as changes keep occurring with rapidly growing technology. This will keep happening into the future and thus create more job opportunities than have ever existed before.

Professor Krimson

In university, students have the freedom to choose their course of study. However, when they’re in high school, they are required to take classes decided by school administrators and other officials. Consider the advantages of allowing high school students to decide their classes and the advantages of continuing to have students study what officials decide. Which do you think is better overall for students in high school? Why?

Ann

I think the biggest advantage of allowing students to choose is that they will take their coursework more seriously. That outweighs the possible advantages from continuing to allow administrators to set class requirements. The only benefit I see is that students will take a larger variety of classes, which they don’t need as high school students since they were doing that throughout their early school years.

Robert

One advantage of having adminstrators decide is that it forces students to take subjects they might not otherwise take. An advantage of students deciding would be that they could take classes that their other classmates are taking. The obvious choice considering these two is to have adminstrators decide. It could lead students down a career focus they may never have thought of before.
